Called California Laurel, Baywood, and Pepperwood, the tree grows nowhere else in the world except a narrow band along the coast of Southern Oregon, in the Sierra Nevada and along the coast of California. It is a member of the Laurel family. The early settlers of Oregon and California looked with amazement at this strange aromatic forest giant.
